Matthew Mille - 21 - Shifter
Matthew had started the day like any other. He had gotten up with the sun and started exercising, going for a short run over to the dojo and stretching along the way. However, something was off as he got closer to the dojo. The door looked off as he jogged up. It didn't take him long to realise that someone had broken into the dojo. Great, vandals and thieves... What would sensei say about this? Inspecting the door before entering to see what the damage was, he could tell that they had broken the lock. He had locked it before leaving the previous day, that much he was certain.

As he walked inside, he noticed things missing as well as graffiti inside the dojo. For some reason, people had felt it proper to have some kind of party inside the building. There were beer cans littering the floor along the walls as well as on the tables. There was a faint off putting smell, which he later found to be from someone who had drank too much... He cleaned that up immediately before calling the police to make a police report. The only way he was going to make sure this was fixed, was with the proper authorities. He informed the dispatcher that there was a break in at the dojo and gave the address so that a police officer could come to take his statement.

As he waited for them to arrive, Matthew made note of everything that had been stolen. There were many wooden practice weapons in the dojo, most were missing, while others were broken or coated in spray paint. It was an utterly, disrespectful thing to do in a dojo. How could anyone in their right mind think that this would be acceptable? He continued to walk around, this time with a garbage bag as he tried to pick up the beer cans, when he heard someone out front. Walking over, he saw a woman approaching the building and it felt as though he had stopped breathing. She was beautiful, and while he had seen good looking people before, none, had ever taken his breath away.

"Hello. I'm Matthew, I called about a break in at my sensei's dojo. I work here and came here this morning to find the lock broken and the inside vandalized." he stated, trying his damnedest not to stutter through what he was saying. What was wrong with him today? He felt like he were acting as though he'd never seen a beautiful woman before. He told himself to stay focused and waited for the police officer to prompt more answers from him.

Katerina tugged at her uniform shirt, straightening her cuffs and ensuring the collar sat perfectly straight. She eyed her reflection critically. Everything was neatly in place, as it had been every day previous. The haetae raised her chin and offered the woman in the mirror a tight, nervous smile. With a nod, Kat spun on her heel and marched out of the bathroom, where her partner waited. He chuckled at her expression. "Ready to go? We got a call about a B&E."

She nodded and touched the breast pocket of her button down. A small notebook half-filled with meticulous notes sat there, accompanied by an equally small pen. "Let's go." The other officer knocked his fist against her shoulder and jangled the keys in front of her, raising them above her reach when she tried to swipe them. Kat snorted and walked to the passenger door of the cruiser. Officer Barnes had yet to let her drive the vehicle, despite the fact that she'd proved herself proficient in all of her driving courses, and knew the precinct like the back of her hand.

Instead, she spent the time between the station and their destination readying her notepad for the new case. Kat started by jotting down the address, the reported crime, and the other cases of breaking and entering that had recently happened in the area. She clicked the pen closed as they pulled into a parking spot, and slipped from the vehicle when Barnes put it in park. "Alright, Ilsovich, you interview the guy, and I'll take a look around." The haetae saluted him smartly, a smirk pulling at the corner of her mouth.

His murmured curse sounded more fond than not, so Katerina paid it little mind. She made sure her name tag and its neatly printed Ilsovich were clearly visible and parallel to the ground. That taken care of, Kat strode with light, efficient steps towards the dojo. The door swung open easily, well-oiled, and with a scratched-up lock. It showed signs of forced entry, but Kat couldn't let her blue eyes linger. Instead, she flashed a professional smile at the tall, dark-haired main that waited inside.

"Hello, sir, I'm Officer Ilsovich. Are you the one who reported the break in?" Kat paused a few feet away from the man so that she could look him in the eye without craning her neck overmuch. Once she had confirmation, she continued, wielding her notepad and pen. "What time did you arrive this morning? Aside from yourself and your sensei, does anyone have keys to this building?" Between each question, Kat waited for a response and jotted down the relevant information.

Matthew Mille - 21 - Shifter
Matthew was entranced in a way. The woman looked shaky in a way. It was as though, she were nervous about something. The way she spoke, it was stiff and sounded rehearsed. He could tell she wasn't at ease, or at least, was very professional with her job. He didn't mind however, since he had called the police to make an official report so this wouldn't happen again.

"I arrived at the dojo around seven fifteen this morning. And no, sensei and I are the only ones with the keys. There are multiple items missing from the dojo as well. It looks as though the individuals had a party inside," he stated, still trying not to stumble through his words. It was hard, but he managed fine. Something about the woman made his heart race. He couldn't quite pinpoint why, but the way she spoke also made him feel something. What was it? Her voice was soft and her stance looked firm but gentle. He wondered how well versed she was in combat, her form looked as though she could easily protect herself. That shouldn't be where his thoughts were headed though.

"Do you need to see the inside for reference?" he asked. It would make sense if she needed photos or something, but he was unsure. This was the first time that the dojo had been broken into and while that was a good thing, he had a small wish to have met this wonderful woman sooner. Something about her was changing him; he was normally so composed and calm. And yet he felt as though he were speaking with tongue twisters. It was hard to keep his focus.

He still had the garbage bag in one hand and shifted his footing. Was he the only one feeling a little uncomfortably excited? It was the only way to describe what he felt. He didn't feel at ease right now, rather thrown off from his normal self, but something told him this was a good thing.

The sound of Barnes approaching from behind drew Kat away from asking another question, and coiled her nervous energy away for the moment. She could rely on the other officer to guide her where she erred and take the lead when necessary; after all, it was why they assigned newbies to more experienced officers as their first partner. Her shoulders sagged a hair, and she stepped briskly to the side to let Barnes fill the doorway, the wall a hairsbreadth from her back.

She could smell alcohol, hops, spray paint. An embedded, lingering tang of sweat, and something... more. Haetae senses weren't as keen as those of werewolves or certain shifters, so she couldn't be sure. Kat gestured Barnes forward into the building. "We would very much like to examine the scene," the woman said after Barnes gestured right back to her. It appeared that she would be handling the interpersonal portion of this particular case. Joyous day.

Kat moved further into the room, striding towards the empty weapons rack. Her steps were light and confident, easily carrying her around the refuse and stains. She looked over her shoulder at the man. "Have you catalogued any of what was stolen, Mr. Mille?" Thank goodness that the dispatcher had thought to ask for a name and relayed it. The name sounded comfortable on her tongue, and she offered him a small smile. His presence nearby was as comfortable as that of her friends, where she usually held herself further apart from strangers, even on duty.

Her notepad and pen hovered at the ready, blue eyes trained on the much taller figure. Barnes collected some of the cans and cups, hands carefully covered in latex gloves. Mille's figure fit one who regularly practiced martial arts, shoulders broad and muscled and suited to his tall frame. Dark eyes and hair that hinted not at all to his species. And most certainly attractive. Not that anything could come of that while Kat was working. She had to remain professional.

Matthew Mille - 21 - Shifter
A thought occurred to the swan shifter, wondering what was really affecting him. Was it really just fascination with the woman? Probably not. There was something more there and he was unsure what it was about. The idea that this woman could be his soulmate never even crossed his mmind. Instead, he watched as the other officer came back over and he suddenly felt very protective of the smaller woman. Where did that come from?

Moving to the side, Matthew allowed the two to enter the dojo and examine the scene. He watched with keen interest as the woman moved over to the weapons rack. If only he was a chameleon shifter, then he could watch both of them at once. Although he would have liked to have kept an eye on the male officer, he much rather keep both eyes on the woman. When asked about cataloging the missing weapons, he shook his head. "We have a record of our weapons, with the sizes and a serial number, but I have yet to go over which are missing," he admitted.

As he felt her eyes on him, he stood a little taller. He hadn't been slouching or anything, but rather puffed his chest out the faintest bit. Hopefully, it wouldn't be too noticeable. What was he? A swan or a peacock now? He shot a smile over to her and moved closer. He was at least an entire foot taller than her, but she looked firm. He was certain she could hold her own against someone of his height. "Is there anything else I should be looking for?" he asked, still moving closer. He then bent down to pick up a can that was near her feet. When Matthew stood up, his face came close to Officer Ilsovich's, and he got a better look at the woman. She was still just as gorgeous as when he first saw her. Then again, that was only ten minutes ago, but still.

Katerina wrote the existence of the inventory list and serial numbers down, and noted that she had requested it. She spent a moment debating internally whether to give him her phone number or her email, and quickly settled on the email address. It would be much easier for the both of them to communicate large or complex information. And it didn't hurt that her work and cell phone numbers were a part of her email signature.

She automatically regulated her breathing when Mille leaned close and then down, plucking up a can. He came quite close to brushing against her as he did so. Mille radiated a pleasant warmth, and she couldn't help but get a whiff of something musky and just as warm. Idly, Katerina wondered what aftershave he used, and if it was cheap enough to gift to Barnes. Lord knew it would save her poor nostrils from the excess of Axe he favored. A good mentor he was, pleasant to smell he was not.

By some grace of God she managed to keep her thoughts off her face. Her pen moved in smooth strokes over a fresh page, inscribing her email address. Katerina tore the page free and, after a moment's hesitation, added her cell number underneath. "Please keep an eye out for any items or articles of clothing that may have been left behind." She held out the paper for Mille to take. "Any information from your inventory about the stolen goods, and any additional items that might have been taken or destroyed."

Barnes tied off his bag and touched her shoulder. She turned her head and nodded. He slipped out the door to put the bag in their car. Katerina tucked her notebook and pen away, aiming a professional smile at Mille. "Feel free to contact me with further information if you learn anything new."

Matthew wasn't able to pinpoint what it was, but he didn't believe that he was just attracted to her looks. While officer Ilsovich was attractive and had caught his attention upon first seeing her, there was more to it. He couldn't quite explain it, but it felt deeper. He yearned to learn more about her and wished that he had met her elsewhere. That way, they could talk about things that weren't just surrounding the breaking and entering plus vandalism of the dojo. Although, he was quite thankful to have met her at all, no matter the reasoning.

As the paper was torn off and she scribbled something else down afterward, he smiled to her and took the paper. Glancing down at it, he saw the official email of the police force, as well as a telephone number. However, the number wasn't the police station's with her extension. It looked like a personal number. The thought of being able to speak with her about other, unofficial business made his hopes rise. "If anything turns up, I shall inform you immediately." he felt stiff with his words. What was wrong with him? Now wasn't the time to clam up!

As the male officer came over and tapped her on the shoulder, he found himself getting protective internally, although it didn't show on his face. What was their relationship like? He wasn't naive to believe that just because they might be partners, that implied they had further relations. But he felt inclined to ask. Good thing he didn't though, that wouldn't have been professional.

Nodding his head, he stated a simple, "I shall, thank you for coming." Watching as they left the dojo, he closed the door and leaned his back against it. His hand came up to cover his face as the other rose to grab at his shirt. His heart was hammering now that she had left, his mind racing with reasons to contact her for things other than the dojo and the stolen items.

It was a few hours later when he finally had located the number of items missing and their serial numbers. He typed up the email on the computer, stating the number of stolen items--eleven of the wooden practice katanas, one kendo helmet, and three sets of padding from the kendo outfits--and then proceeded to ask something else. He wrote:

"I hope it isn't inappropriate to contact you about other matters? I would like to request a dinner, if alright. I hope my informal request isn't taking your kindness too far. If so, please let me know. Thank you."

And then finished the email with his full name, followed by his own cell number underneath. Well, now he just had to wait and see. Hopefully this wouldn't blow up in his face.

Katerina thanked Mille and allowed her partner to shepherd her out of the dojo. He told her what he'd found while inspecting the scene, and Kat shared what she'd learned interviewing Matthew Mille. She mentioned that she didn't think he knew anything about the people who'd broken in as the officers returned to their squad car. The older officer hummed in acknowledgement, rolling a shoulder noncommittally.

She spent the ride back to the precinct reviewing her notes and annotating them with information from Barnes. The process made her slightly carsick, but she ignored it with the ease of long practice. A quick glance out the window every now and then kept the nausea to a minimum. Soon enough, the car eased to a stop in a free spot. Kat climbed out of the vehicle and tucked her notebook and pen away.

Officer Barnes led the way back to their desks, and Kat followed his example readily. She settled in for a morning of paperwork. Occasionally, she rolled her wrists and cracked her knuckles. Lunch consisted of a sandwich she'd made that morning, eaten at her desk. Kat checked her email at regular intervals, answering mail from fellow officers and dealing with spam.

Shortly after she'd finished the preliminary report for the dojo, an email arrived from Mille. Kat straightened and pulled the file towards herself, pen in hand. He'd sent her serial numbers and an inventory for the stolen goods, which she copied down and printed out for good measure. Belatedly, she noticed his invitation and blushed. Thankfully, it hadn't printed with the inventory list.

[2:15PM Outgoing] Hi, Matthew, this is Katerina Ilsovich. Thank you for your email. I would be happy to join you for dinner. Would tonight at eight work for you?

Matthew had sent off the email and would check his phone every so often to see if there was a reply. He couldn't have the sound on to alert him when the email would come in.

The students had started to show up for classes and were surprised to see the state of the dojo. His sensei was even more shocked to see it. Matthew had told him that people broke in and vandalized the place, but he hadn't expected it to be so bad. Of course, the garbage and slight debris had been placed out for the garbage trucks. But it was still bad.

The students had offered to help clean up, as best as they could, scrubbing spray paint off the walls and doing anything that needed to be done. It made Matthew fill with pride that his students would rather help clean up first and make the dojo respectable again before considering their lessons.

It was around two-thirty in the afternoon when he was able to check his phone. There was an text that arrived fifteen minutes ago. He read over it once, a blank look on his face, before a smile broke out and he read it again. He had a first name to go by now. And she'd said yes... That was the best part for him. He felt excited and knew that he would have to look for something respectable to wear. He had a few things that were dressy, but he didn't think wearing a suit to a first date would go over well, especially depending on where they go. It wouldn't be good to be overdressed. Wait... it was a date...

[2:38PM Outgoing] It's a date! Where should I pick you up? Is there anything you'd prefer to eat, I have a place in mind, but thought I should ask first :)

He texted, having backspaced a few times and trying to word himself right. Hopefully, she wouldn't mind that he'd said it was a date. He wasn't even sure if she would want to date him. They had only just met and it was purely business. But damn, he felt his heart swell at the thought of seeing her tonight. He couldn't wait!

-----

Since the cleanup of the dojo had taken so long, there hadn't been much time left for lessons, so his sensei had dismissed everyone for the day. Which was both bad and good. Bad because he looked forward to teaching his students. But good because now he could go to his place and get ready. Matthew had chosen a dark blue, button up shirt and a pair of black, dress-casual, jeans. It was definitely a change from the sweaty running clothes he'd been wearing when he met Katerina earlier today.

He drove up to the address he'd been given, rolled down the window and parked the car, turning off the engine before sending a text that he was outside. He had planned to take her to a new restaurant with great reviews. It wasn't anything expensive or highly formal, but was something he'd wanted to try. The thought of going to a restaurant alone though, especially one that was classified as a 'date' type of restaurant, would be awkward.

He watched the door of the building, anticipating the feeling he would have when he saw her out of uniform. Hopefully, he would be able to speak more on this date. He was generally rather quiet and that wouldn't be good on a date. He had had trouble forming words before. How was he supposed to do it now?
